johnny jones launches the jj Foundation Photography Awards 2017

Hi to all you aspiring young photographers.

I recall with fond memories entering my school photography competition. I must have been about 11 years old. In those days we had to process the film (yes film) and had to get the negatives printed in Black & White.
Winning that competition spurred me on to take a keen interest in photography and in later years apply to Reuters and Condé Nast Vogue after leaving school. I was offered jobs at both! The lure of the fashion world led me to work in the Vogue Studios darkroom and the rest is history. I’m now chairman of jj Media, with 10 film/photographic & event spaces, lighting and digital camera hire and a location agency.

You guys now have it easy. You can take a fantastic photograph on a smart phone and instantly share it with 1000’s of people. No processing or printing necessary. How about sharing it with some industry professionals? Maybe you’ve got talent. Maybe you’ve got potential. Maybe you’d like to spend a week on work experience in our vibrant studios and meet the photographers who have one of the best jobs in the world. We have some DSLR cameras to give away, as well as studio time.

In association with our friends at Eastside Educational Trust we are calling out to anyone 13-19 years of age in full time education who has an interest in photography. Send a maximum of 3 digital images in any of the categories and with a bit of luck (and talent) this could be the start of your career, whether it be photographer, lighting technician, hair and make-up artist, fashion stylist, digital operator, artist or one of the endless list of career opportunities that service this extraordinary industry.

I still love taking photographs. If you do, why not give it go. Pick up your phone or DSLR, we want to see the results. My advice; don’t use too many effects. A little bit of Photoshop or effects won’t hurt, but there’s no substitute for pure content.

Good luck!
